Most people are baffled when I tell them I have dessert almost every night. Yes, I do and I feel great about it. I’m going to tell you 5 reasons why you can eat dessert every day! Yes, I know, shocking. Just keep reading!
5 Reasons Why You Can Eat Dessert Every Day
1. It tastes DAMN good, is pleasurable and is satisfying!
To me, this one is a no brainer but it’s surprising how many people feel like they shouldn’t experience pleasure or satisfaction through food. Foods are not inherently healthy or unhealthy. For example, if you were really hungry and craving something heavier and warm with a salty flavor, a peach really wouldn’t be a “healthy” choice because it would be denying your needs. In that case, a burger would actually be a better option. “Healthy” has a really relative meaning depending on context. Essentially, this means the word healthy has no meaning in relation to food. All foods have their place in intuitive eating. Once you have gotten past the diet mentality and food rules, there is some gentle nutrition guidance that can come into play from time to time but it is not intended to alter your unconditional permission to eat whatever you want!
2. You will no longer obsess about dessert and sweets
Restriction and food rules are what cause you to obsess over certain foods. When you think about it, this totally makes sense because you are literally depriving body of what it wants and needs. So, no wonder you obsess. It’s your body’s way of saying “feed me please, stop restricting me from this food”. When you allow yourself unconditional permission to eat whatever you want, the obsession disappears and food no longer takes up all of the space in your brain. Imagine what you could do with all of that freed up time no longer spent obsessing over food and your body?
3. It can enhance your mood
Have you noticed how you feel when you eat dessert? I think we have all experienced the mood enhancing effects of dessert. Dessert can help you feel less stressed and happier overall. It can literally make your body produce a chemical called serotonin, which is the neurotransmitter that makes you feel happy. So go ahead and allow yourself to fully enjoy it without any guilt.
4. It can improve your health
Yes, I know this is contrary to popular opinion but it is true. Giving yourself the freedom to eat dessert allows you to eat more balanced and flexibly, which leads to overall better health and sanity! Giving up food rules can release significant amounts of stress from your life, improving your overall well-being. Food is just one small piece of your health. Mental health, relationships, career satisfaction, self-love and self-care are all important factors in your health that deserve nurturing and attention.
5. Eating dessert can help you break free from dieting
Suddenly decreasing your sugar and carbohydrate intake (which is what happens on most diets or with disordered eating), deprives your body of the glucose needed for energy, according to the National Eating Disorder Association. This is why most people feel tired, weak and foggy on diets. Clearly, this is our bodies trying to tell us deprivation is NOT beneficial for our health. Once you re-learn to trust your body’s wisdom and nourish your body in a way that feels good to YOU, diets will no longer have a place in your life and you will discover your own personal definition of health.
