I’m sooo excited to be sharing my step-by-step process for setting intuitive New Year’s resolutions with you! These are all of the steps I used this year to set my goals, intentions and resolutions and I’ve never been more excited about the year to come. In the past, my goals have been all over the place. I usually have so many that I can’t even wrap my head around them. But not this year. This process gave me so much clarity on exactly what I want, how I want to feel and who I want to become. I can’t waaaait for you to experience it too!
I break it down into a simple step-by-step process for you to plan your best year yet using YOUR intuition.
A couple tips before you get started:
- Only focus on the first 3-6 months. Any more than that will be overwhelming. You also want to remain flexible to shift gears as you grow throughout the year.
- Make it fun; this is time to focus on YOU and YOUR dreams. Put on some music, light a candle, sit on your back porch, diffuse some essential oils…whatever feels good for you.
- This system isn’t just for setting New Year’s resolutions. You can use this process several times throughout the year and I’d encourage you to do so.
- Let your intuition guide you.
Step 1: Brainstorm your dreams and goals
Part 1: Imagine, dream, let it all out!
Give yourself a good chunk of time to brainstorm and really let yourself get into flow. Really think about what a transformative year would look like for you.

Action step: Write down all of your ideas on your computer, in a journal, on sticky notes….whatever works for you.
Part 2: Review your list and cross off any external goals that don’t feel aligned with who you really are. Use your intuition. If you feel tense and uneasy when you think about a goal, that’s your intuition telling you it’s not in alignment. If you feel free or a sense of excitement, you’re probably headed in the right direction.
Let’s talk about internal and external goals for a sec.
What are external goals?
External goals will make you seem successful to the outside world but they are not fulfilling to you because they’re rooted in how other’s perceive you. Having some external goals are fine (let’s be real…we all do) but when you’re seeking external validation, reaching these goals WILL NOT fulfill you. We all think, “whenI get or do X, then I’ll be happy”. But IT NEVER WORKS like that. Ask yourself, do you really want those external goals because you believe it will genuinely make you feel good or do you want to impress people?
- I want to lose weight
- I will go on a diet January 1st
- I will have the perfect house
What are internal goals?
Internal goals revolve more around trying to achieve a state of mind on a daily basis rather than a going after a destination. It’s about wanting to FEEL good every day. When you focus on the feelings you are really after, you are able to live in alignment with your true self because you’ll be in a constant state of achieving your goals.
- I want to feel abundant every single day
- I will give up talking negatively about food and bodies (including my own)
- I will throw away my scale because that number tells me absolutely nothing about my health or worth
- I will find ways to move body that feel joyful and emotionally satisfying to me
Action step: Review your list and cross off any external goals that don’t feel aligned with the most authentic version of you.
Part 3: Review your list again and assess if you believe your goals are possible or not.
Give yourself goals that work within your belief system. If you create extreme goals that are so far out there, then you aren’t going to believe them and if you don’t believe in them, guess what? It’s probably not happening. I’m not saying these goals are not possible for you, but if you don’t believe them, then how do you expect to achieve them? Instead, set goals that are still a stretch but that are believable. This way, you have the confidence to achieve them but you’re also still up-leveling and growing.
Action step: Review your list again and ask yourself if you believe your goals are possible? If not, how can you tweak them to feel more confident in hitting them while still feeling like you are challenging yourself? Make those tweaks now.
Step 2: Determine your WHY
Figure out WHY you want to achieve these goals or resolutions. How will you feel if you achieve these goals? What will it mean for you to achieve the goals? What are the consequences of not hitting your goals?
Action step: Once you’ve figured out your why, write it down.
Step 3: Debrief last year… what worked well? What didn’t?
The goal here isn’t to dwell on the past. It’s to take a step back and reflect so that you can move forward with clarity and intention.
What did you love about this year? What was difficult?
What do you want to change?
What brought you the most fulfillment and happiness?
Did you achieve the goals you set last year? How did achieving those goals make you feel?
Action step: Think about (or write down) your answers to these questions.
Step 4: Take inspired action
I suggest choosing 3-5 main goals. When you make a huge list, it feels really overwhelming and it’s hard to commit to all of them. Choose the 3-5 most important goals to you (the ones that will bring you the most fulfillment). If more than 5 feels good for you, that’s okay too. We’re all different and what feels comfortable for one person, might not for someone else.
Next, determine what needs to happen in order for you to achieve those goals. You can think of these as sub-goals.
Lastly, is there anything from step 1 that you’re feeling FOMO (fear of missing out) about? It’s okay to have future goals that you aren’t going to focus on quite yet. We’ll put these on a separate list to come back to later.
Action step: Write down your 3-5 main goals and the sub-goals that fall under each of these that will help you achieve them. Then, create your FOMO list (goals that just didn’t make the cut this time but that you want to do eventually) and set these aside for now.
Step 5: Surrender to the divine timing
When you have really strict timeliness and obsess over achieving a goal, you naturally create resistance because this energy is really stressful and negative. You have to let go and allow the magic to come in. I’m not saying let go in the sense of giving up, but more so being at peace knowing what you deserve and that your worth isn’t dependent on if you achieve your goals exactly as you planned them. When you create from this place of confidence and gratitude, that’s when your goals will happen.
Yes, we all want to focus on becoming the best versions of ourselves, but we need to believe that regardless of whether we hit our goals perfectly, we will learn and grow through the journey. And that’s what really matters. When you surrender control, you will create space for the amazing things you want this year.
Action step: Say this affirmation or write it down 5 times: “I am choosing to believe that the universe gives me exactly what I need at exactly the right time.”
Step 6: Embody the version of yourself that has already achieved these dreams
Who do you need to be to achieve these goals? What do you need to believe about yourself to be true in order to manifest these goals?
If you were to already have achieved these goals, how would you feel? How would you act? What would you say/do/think? How would your relationships be affected?
Are you truly excited about these goals? Is this the version of you that you really want to become? If not, go back to steps 1 & 4 and get honest with yourself. Make the tweaks you need to in order to feel in complete alignment with your goals.
Action step: Write down who you need to be in order to achieve your goals. Then actually DO those things and BE that version of you.
Cheers to you making time for YOURSELF! Now it’s time to put your thoughts into action. I created a free workbook for you that will guide you through this process step-by-step. Download the workbook here!
