Is there a such thing as TOO productive? What if you actually need to SLOW DOWN in order to speed up? Keep reading to find out how doing a productivity detox can be LIFE CHANGING!
I did a major DETOX last month.
But not the diet culture kind you might be imagining (green juice, hungry and irritable AF, cabbage soup, etc). I don’t believe in food detoxes; our bodies do this for us automatically. Self-torture and punishment NEVER leads to long-term sustainable health (and it likely will F up your relationship with food and your body). Instead, I am a huge believer in intuitive eating, which is a whole other topic you should def check out if you’re someone who wants to feel chill and confident AF with food and your body.
Okay so anyways…..about the detox. I’m calling it my 30 day productivity detox but it was also a self-help detox in some ways too. Basically it was a detox from all of the things I was using to avoid being present and actually feeling my feelings.

I am the type of person who can’t sit still. I always feel like there’s more to do and I bounce from task to task like an energizer bunny. I fill every free minute with a self-help book/podcast. I watch online courses while I am eating. I listen to podcasts while I’m working out. I read self-help or personal growth books before bed. I make my bed while I’m on a conference call. Lots of DOing; not much BEing. Sound familiar anyone?
Productivity isn’t inherently bad
I actually LOVE learning/being productive and doing all the self-help and personal growth things to become the best version of myself. But at what point do you cross the line from bettering yourself and accomplishing your goals to avoiding being present in your life? I felt myself starting to cross that line. And let me tell ya, it didn’t feel good. I was noticing my anxiety starting to pick up. My back pain started coming back. My body was basically screaming at me like “hello, you are overworking yourself, slow the F down please!!”. But I clearly wasn’t listening.
My 30 Day Productivity Detox
I was talking to my life coach about how upset I was that my back pain was coming back. She was like “Duh sweetie, have you taken any breaks recently? No? yeah, I didn’t think so.”
She’s actually the one who encouraged me to SLOW THE F DOWN and do a productivity and self-help detox for a whole month. Aside from the Manifestation Babe Academy online course I’d already committed to, I went cold turkey on everything else I was using to be busy 24/7 (aka the things I was using to distract myself from being present). I didn’t listen to any podcasts. I only read books purely for pleasure (Sylvia Day’s Crossfire Series is juicy AF btw). I took a week off of working on my blog (which is the longest I’ve taken off it over a year!). I barely went on social media.
What would you have to face if you weren’t so busy?
When i found myself being a busy body, I asked myself, what am i trying to avoid? This brought up A LOT of uncomfortable-ness (is that a word?). As soon as I’d slow down or try to take a break, my heart would start racing uncontrollably and it was hard to catch my breath (for all my peeps who have anxiety; hi i see you and you are not alone).
I was SUPER frustrated because the point of slowing down was to feel better not worse! WTF!
How I reframed feeling uncomfortable
I CHOSE to give it a new meaning. What if everything that happens in life is actually neutral and we are just the ones that give it meaning? What if there was no meaning in life except for the meaning we give it? What if you could see experiences for what they are as they are, then ask yourself how you can choose to make it mean something better?
I told myself: This is a good thing. This is proof that I am dramatically up-leveling and I am excited about that. I trust that my body will catch up to my soul. This is me just releasing and it’s so good that it’s happening now because I have so much life and freedom ahead of me.
Almost right away, I started feeling better. And now after the whole month of detoxing, I feel AMAZING.
What if making space to just BE is the key to unlocking your intuition and freedom? What if you actually need to slow down in order to slingshot ahead?
How to create your own 30 day detox:

1. Figure out what you need to detox
It doesn’t necessarily have to be productivity. What are YOU using to distract yourself from being present and feeling your emotions? Is it social media? Is it being productive? Is it obsessing over self-help? Is it having the TV or a podcast on 24/7?
THAT’S what I’d encourage you to detox. FYI, please don’t try this with food. Our bodies detox for us automatically and food detoxes can not only wreak havoc your body, but seriously F up your mindset around food and your body. If you find yourself trying to control food and your body and thinking about it all the time (it’s exhausting…i feel you!), schedule a free initial coaching call with me!
2. Reframe your old story
What is holding you back from letting go? Maybe you’re scared of failing.
What are you making it mean? Maybe you’re making slowing down mean that you are worthless and lazy. Is that meaning empowering you or disempowering you?
What would the version of you who knows without a doubt that slowing down is what you need to speed up say/do/think? Maybe that version of you takes a break every day to meditate. Maybe that version of you only goes on social media for 30 minutes a day.
What new empowering beliefs are you going to choose to adopt? Maybe you need to believe that slowing down is the key to your success. Maybe you need to believe that negative emotions are actually not negative at all and are instead your body’s way of alerting you to something that needs attention and care?
3. Set boundaries
How long are you going to commit to detoxing? If it’s social media you need to detox, will you go cold turkey? Or will you maybe only go on social media 3 days a week? If it’s productivity, what “busy” tasks are you going to let go of this month?
What does this detox mean to you and what are you willing to commit to?
4. Ask yourself what you need
Every single day, ask yourself what you need. Let your intuition guide you to what you need that day. It might be different than yesterday and that’s okay.
Do you need to meditate? Do you need to lay down and read a book just for pleasure for a few minutes (maybe all day)? Do you need to go on a walk? Do you need to let yourself just sit and do nothing?
What do you need to give yourself permission to do? What would feel really good? What would nourish your mind, body and soul?
5. Reflect & re-set
What’s the point of doing all of this if you don’t take a step back to reflect on how you’re feeling? Give yourself some time to digest it all. What came up for you during the month? How did you feel before/during/after this detox? What habits do you want to continue even now that this detox is over? Do you need to continue the detox for another week? What did you learn throughout this process?

6. Seek ongoing support
What would it be like to have more support in your life? Someone you can text at any time. Someone who you can talk with regularly to help you get past whatever it is that’s holding you back. Someone who gives you space to discover YOUR own solutions rather than throwing advice at you.
